We're back! After a weekend off, the NASCAR Truck Series is back in action this week at Michigan International Speedway.
This is the only visit by the Trucks to a two-mile track this year, so it'll be interesting to see how it all plays out. Last year, Austin Hill won this race, while three of the drivers who started in the top five crashed out. Will this be an accident fest? Will we get some big surprises, like last year's top 10s by Austin Wayne Self, Bayley Currey, and Ray Ciccarelli?
Here at RotoBaller, we want to help you make informed decisions about your DFS lineups, which is why I'll be breaking down the slates for the Truck Series. Let's look at some NASCAR Truck Series DFS lineup picks for the Henry Ford Health System 200 on DraftKings. John Hunter Nemechek #8 ($11,100)
Starting 34th
We're building today's lineup around one thing: place differential upside.
In particular, there are two trucks starting below 30th who have the ability to compete for a really good finish, and we're building around both guys. Let's start with John Hunter Nemechek.
NEMCO isn't the best team, but JHN did pilot this truck to a sixth-place finish at Charlotte after starting 38th. That upside alone has me playing him, even if his DFS price is the highest in the series today. It's hard to resist this upside with a six-time Truck Series winner and current Cup Series driver.
Parker Kligerman #75 ($10,800)
Starting 35th
Yep, upside play.
This is Kligerman's third race this year. He started both of the first two 37th or worse and drove up to top 20 finishes, with an average running position in the top 20 as well in each.
I don't see the same upside as Nemechek -- it would take some issues with other trucks for Kligerman to be a contender for the top 10, whereas I think Nemechek can drive his way into the top 10 -- but a solid top 20 finish, maybe top 15, and Kligerman will have a big DFS points day, even if his price isn't quite what we might want to pay.
Todd Gilliland #38 ($8,900)
Starting 19th
Despite two finishes of 20th or worse in the last three races, I still think this 38 truck is a worthy one to throw into some lineups.
He starts 19th, and in 10 races this year has six top 10 finishes. Two of the times he didn't were because of crashes. Last week's 20th place finished dropped this team just enough in owners points for him to go from a "starting too high for me to risk it" driver to a "oh, he suddenly has place differential upside" driver.
I'm going to believe that Gilliland can get back to his level of production from the earlier parts of this season, in which case he provides excellent value on Friday night.
Ryan Truex #40 ($6,800)
Starting 20th
This is Truex's third race in this 40 truck this year. He has finishes of 13th, 27th, and 13th.
Truex had some tire issues in that Kentucky race where he finished 27th. Otherwise, he's a solid top 15 driver in a truck that Ross Chastain has piloted to a pair of top 10s. (By the way, the weird musical chairs at Niece for Chastain is a lot -- he's started in three different Niece trucks this year. Anyways...)
Ryan Truex isn't the same caliber of driver as his brother, but he is the owner of 19 Truck Series top 10s. He knows how to keep his truck out of trouble, and has low-end top 10 upside.
Ty Majeski #45 ($6,700)
Starting 18th
I just keep recommending Ty Majeski in DFS, don't I?
I do it because I think he's a solid driver and because he's driving for a competitive team. His three DNFs in 10 races are worrisome, but in the races he's finished, his worst result was a pair of 19ths. Keep the truck out of trouble, and Majeski is a top 15 driver.
Starting 18th doesn't provide us with a huge amount of place differential upside, but it gives us a little bit of it, and Majeski has the speed to finish five to eight spots higher than he's starting. That's enough for us to take the value with him.
Dawson Cram #55 ($5,700)
Starting 38th
Michigan tends to produce some weird finishes. Just look, for instance, at the intro to this article, where I mentioned guys who did well here last season. There will be surprise drivers who outlast the wreck fest and get top 20s, or top 15s, or even top 10s.
In trying to find a dart throw for that today, I landed on Dawsom Cram. One reason? He's trying. In two races in this 55 truck, Cram has a best finish of 28th at Kentucky, where he finished one lap down. He also piloted a Reaume truck to a 25th at Kansas.
Cram isn't going to just pull this 55 truck onto the hauler after a few laps. And if we need someone to outlast a bunch of wrecks and gain place differential points while also not being able to lose too many of those points due to his starting spot, Cram makes sense. This probably blows up in our face if we have a clean race, but are we really expecting a clean race in 2020?
