Mariners Sign First-Rounder Emerson Hancock
4 years agoThe Seattle Mariners signed rookie right-handed pitcher Emerson Hancock, their first-round pick at No. 6 overall, for $5.7 million on Thursday. It comes just under the slot value of $5.742 million for the sixth overall pick in the draft. Hancock comes out of Georgia and has the best combination of polish and stuff in this year's draft class with a fastball that reaches 99 mph and three offspeed pitches (slider, changeup, curveball) that are all plus pitches. Many evaluators compare Hancock closely with Tigers pitching prospect Casey Mize because of their similar builds and ability to pound the strike zone with all their offerings. Because of his polish, the 21-year-old Hancock should rise rather quickly through Seattle's minor league ranks.
