Rays Take Two Righties Among Final Three Picks
5 years agoThe Tampa Bay Rays selected St. Joseph High School pitcher Hunter Barnhart with the 96th overall pick in the third round in the 2020 MLB draft on Thursday. The Rays added to their roster by taking University of California - Davis shortstop Tanner Murray in the fourth round and Central Florida pitcher Jeff Hakanson in the fifth and final round. Barnhart was an MVP quarterback at his high school but also turned heads this spring with his fastball velocity (96 mph) and his plus curveball. He doesn't have a ton of experience but is big and strong and throws strikes. Murray is 6-foot-2, 170 pounds and has a chance to stick at shortstop and could add power at the plate as he matures. Hakanson has a deceiving delivery and a high spin rate on his 92-94 mph fastball and has also improved his slider. He's 6-foot, 185 pounds and was 3-1 with a 1.42 ERA and 59 K's in 18 appearances as a senior.
