Indians Select Right-Hander Tanner Burns
5 years agoThe Cleveland Indians selected Auburn pitcher Tanner Burns with the 36th overall pick in the 2020 MLB draft on Wednesday. Questions about Burns' size (6-foot) and signability caused him to slide to the 37th round out of high school in 2017. But the right-hander immediately landed in Auburn's rotation as a freshman and he struck out 15 in a game as a sophomore. When healthy, the 21-year-old can control a mid-90s fastball to both sides of the plate, and he also has a slurvy slider that can be a plus offering. Because of his size, Burns comes with durability concerns (he had shoulder issues as a sophomore). His proponents draw comparisons to Sonny Gray.
