Vonn Bell 2020 Outlook: Talented Player, Uncertain Role
5 years agoCincinnati Bengals strong safety Vonn Bell had a very productive 2019 season that ended early due to injury. In 13 games, the former Saint recorded 89 tackles (66 solo), four tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries, fives passes defended, one interception, and a touchdown. The 25-year-old safety finished as IDP42 thanks to 174.6 points, although his 13.4 points per game average ranked 20th overall. It was the fourth straight season Bell recorded at least 80 tackles and 60 solo tackles, and his third season with four tackles for loss. The former Ohio State Buckeye chose to sign a contract with the Bengals in the 2020 offseason. Unfortunately, that decision clouds the ability to determine his role for the 2020 season. The Bengals have called Bell a “luxury free-agent” signing this offseason, as both their starting safeties (Shawn Williams and Jessie Bates) return in 2020. Williams and Bates each accounted for 100 tackles in 2019 and appear to have a grasp on a starting role. If Bell does win a starting position in training camp, his 2019 finish was supported by five fumble recoveries, which isn’t a sustainable statistic. That, along with the crowded Bengals secondary, make Bell a questionable IDP player in fantasy drafts heading into the 2020 season.
