Philip Rivers 2020 Outlook: A Fine QB2 With Bounce-Back Potential
5 years agoIndianapolis Colts quarterback Philip Rivers will play the 2020 season behind one of the best offensive lines in football, which is not at all a bad situation to fall into in his first year with a team not called the Chargers. The fantasy community is naturally disenchanted with Rivers after he posted his lowest touchdown total since 2007 and tied the second-highest interception total of his career in 2019, but there's plenty to like about him as a potential bounce-back candidate in 2020. For one thing, he has never missed a game since becoming a full-time starter all the way back in 2006. At the very least, he'll make a fine insurance policy behind any high-end fantasy QB who suffers an injury. He's also not lacking in offensive weapons despite the change in scenery from a lush fantasy pasture in Los Angeles. A healthy T.Y. Hilton gives Rivers one of the better deep-ball threats in the league. The six-foot-four frame of rookie Michael Pittman Jr. gives Rivers an intriguing big target at wideout. Rivers also has a well-established history of looking for his tight ends, and Jack Doyle has served the Colts admirably at the position. Rivers' current QB23 ADP makes sense, given what he did last year and the fact that he's 38 years old. But he also remains one of the league's more accurate quarterbacks and he's still capable of reeling off big plays on deep throws. With ironclad protection in front of him and a solid collection of pass-catchers scurrying down the field, Rivers could easily exceed that low-end QB2 value. He's fine as a backup in standard-sized one-QB leagues, and should be able to provide positive returns as a secondary option in two-QB and Superflex leagues.
