Preston Williams 2020 Outlook: The Penny Stock In The Bull Market
5 years agoMiami Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams was a rare bright spot in the Dolphins’ miserable 2019 season. He went undrafted due to some off-field issues in college, but he was able to put his past behind him and ball out in 2019. The 6’5” rookie immediately started turning heads in the preseason when he made spectacular catches look routine, and he carried that momentum into the regular season and quickly became the favorite target for both quarterbacks Josh Rosen and Ryan Fitzpatrick. He finished with 32 receptions on 60 targets for 428 yards and three touchdowns in only eight games, a 16-game pace of 64 receptions for 856 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately, Williams' season was cut short when he tore his ACL in Week 9, but fear not, because the former Colorado State Ram is completely intent on starting the regular season in 2020. In fantasy, he figures to be a tremendous value on draft day because wide receiver DeVante Parker exploded in the second half of 2020 and finished as the overall WR6. As a result, Parker is being overdrafted as the WR23 and the sophomore stud has become an afterthought as the WR57 in ADP. However, through the first eight weeks of the Dolphins season, the explosive rookie had more targets, receptions, and yards than Parker, and it was not until he was lost for the season that Parker blew up. What this should tell fantasy owners is that Williams has a chance to be just as productive as Parker, if not more productive, yet Parker’s ADP sits in the fifth or sixth-round and Williams is basically going undrafted. The concern is that he is likely to get off to a slow start as he comes back from a torn ACL, so owners who draft him will need to be patient early on. Likewise, owners who do not draft him should look to trade for him in the middle of the season because it is only a matter of time until the talented wide out floods the highlight reel once more. Consider Williams a WR5 with incredible upside. The risk is non-existent, but the reward could be extravagant.
