Drew Pomeranz 2020 Outlook: Elite Holds League Upside
5 years agoSan Diego Padres relief pitcher Drew Pomeranz put up decent numbers overall last season, but he was elite once he started coming out of the bullpen exclusively. As a reliever, Pomeranz put up a 1.88 ERA/1.67 xFIP to go with an impressive 47.2 K% and 7.6 BB%. All of those statistics show an elite bullpen arm, and Pomeranz may have finally found his niche in his ninth season in the league. He'll be part of an extremely talented Padres bullpen in 2020, pitching ahead of closer Kirby Yates and likely sharing setup duties with Emilio Pagan. Pomeranz should get enough strikeouts and keep a low enough ERA to be useful even in standard leagues, but his real value will be in holds leagues, where he has the potential to be one of the best late-round pick ups.
