Dellin Betances 2020 Outlook: The Rare RP with Non-Closer Value
5 years agoIt has been a little while since we've seen Dellin Betances on a Major League mound. Other than 0.2 innings in 2019, he missed the entire year due to shoulder, lat, and Achilles injuries. That was also the last time he donned pinstripes for the New York Yankees. Betances now finds himself as a member of the Mets and expects himself to be ready for spring training. Other than the abbreviated 2019 appearance, the last time we saw Betances pitch, he was putting together his fifth-consecutive season averaging at least 13.5 K/9 while pitching at least 59 innings. Though the league strikeout rate has continued to rise, Betances remains one of the preeminent strikeout pitchers in the game. Those strikeouts, as well as premium rate stats (career 2.36 ERA and 1.04 WHIP), make Betances a rare relief pitcher who doesn't need to close to have fantasy value. That is important as he is unlikely to see closer duty anytime soon for the Mets with both Edwin Diaz and Seth Lugo entrenched in front of him. Betances in a set-up role is still worth owning. His worst full season in the majors saw him put up a 140 ERA+ and 1.1 bWAR in 2016. Oh by the way, he had an absolutely elite 1.78 FIP that season. Betances expects to be ready for the start of the 2020 season. When he does take the mound, we know the production he'll deliver. With an ADP outside the top 350, Betances isn't even being drafted in standard leagues. He is worth a roster spot as soon as he's ready to pitch.
