Griffin Canning 2020 Outlook: Young Arm Looks To Make The Leap
5 years agoGriffin Canning's rookie season was a bit of a mixed bag. He struck out 96 batters in 90 innings, with a 13.8% swinging strike rate that put him in the same neighborhood as studs like Stephen Strasburg, Shane Bieber, Chris Sale, and Yu Darvish. He also did a decent job of limiting walks, helping him to a respectable 1.22 WHIP. However, he struggled to get ahead of hitters consistently (57.8% first strike rate) and with the long ball (1.39 HR/9), which led to an inflated 3.58 ERA. Canning also dealt with inflammation in his pitching elbow that required two separate stints on the injured list, the second of which ended his season. Because he has only logged 105 innings in each of the last two seasons, expectations should be tempered regarding his workload. However, those concerns have already been built into his draft price, as he currently is the 63rd starting pitcher off the board with an NFBC ADP of 225.
