George Springer 2020 Outlook: Top 10 Upside At A Third Round Price
5 years agoHouston Astros outfielder George Springer had his best MLB season in 2019 by essentially every measure. He set new career-highs in home runs (39), RBI (96) and batting average (.292), amongst other stats. His .974 OPS in 2019 was a staggering increase from his .780 OPS in 2018. There was a clear change in Springer's approach last year that allowed for him to hit for more power. Springer's barrel rate increased from 8.9% in 2018 to 14.3% in 2019 and his .401 wOBA ranked amongst the top 5% of the league last year. No longer is Springer a 30 home run type of guy. His 39 home runs last year came in just 122 games, so he's someone we can project for around 40 home runs in 2020, assuming his power approach returns. Springer is currently projected as a late second or early third round pick in most redraft formats. However, he has the potential to deliver a first round caliber season. Setting the table for the prolific Astros offense, Springer projects to easily top 200 combined runs and RBI in 2020. If he can keep his average up and top 40 home runs, you're looking at a Juan Soto-like season, though Springer can go as much as a round-and-a-half later than Soto. Springer is worthy of drafting in the middle or end of the second round and is an absolute steal in the third.
