Tyler Glasnow 2020 Outlook: Will Health Persevere With This High-Upside Arm?
5 years agoA forearm strain cut short a commanding season from Rays hurler Tyler Glasnow last season as he finished with a sparkling 1.78 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in 60.2 IP. The right-hander cut his walk rate nearly in half from 2018 to 6.1% while establishing a K-rate that would have finished fourth among qualified arms in the majors last season (33.0% K%). He scrapped his slider in 2019 and focused primarily on a two-pitch approach that featured a 96.9 MPH four-seamer paired with a knee-buckling curveball that held an elite 43.9% Whiff%. Glasnow was most effective with this pitch, holding batters to a .177 BA and an expected outcome of .116 without allowing a single home run off this delivery. We know the talent is there for the 26-year-old, the glaring question is if he can sustain the dominant results over a full healthy season. The possibility of this transpiring is salivating, but our expectations need to be held in check as he's only eclipsed 150 IP in a season once in his pro career. Glasnow's 68.9 ADP creates a high risk/reward selection, but one with an unparalleled upside at this cost.
