Jonathan Villar 2020 Outlook: Versatile Jackrabbit Poised For Another Successful Season
5 years agoJonathan Villar turned in a stellar fantasy campaign for fantasy owners in 2019: .274/.339/.453 with 24 HR and 40 SB. It was somewhat surprising to see Villar nontendered by the Orioles and end up on the Marlins of all teams, but he should still put up quality fantasy numbers. He was only caught nine times on the bases for a success rate of approximately 82%, suggesting that the steals should keep on coming. His career-high of 24 homers probably isn't as sustainable, but he did raise his fly ball rate to 31.3% (25.4% career) while matching his career HR/FB (16.7%). Marlins Park isn't as homer-friendly as Camden Yards, so you're probably better off expecting 15 HR or so if he maintains his 2019 FB%. He's currently projected to hit near the top of Miami's batting order, giving him plenty of opportunities to deliver counting stats. The middle infielder is also slated to play 3B, and early word is that he could see outfield time as well. If you care about positional versatility, Villar is one of the most flexible names you can call on draft day. Villar won't come cheap (29.44 NFBC ADP at the time of writing), but 40+ steals potential without killing you in other categories make him worth the price.
