Omar Narvaez A Trade Candidate
5 years agoSeattle Mariners catcher Omar Narvaez, who hit a very solid .278/.353/.460 with 22 home runs in 2019, is a candidate to be traded after the team signed first baseman Evan White to a long-term deal earlier this week. Austin Nola is now free to become the backup catcher for Tom Murphy in 2020. Seattle also has prospect Cal Raleigh developing in the minors as a third option behind the dish. Narvaez is more attractive on the trade market because he's a year younger than Murphy and has a longer track record. While Narvaez is one of the better hitting catchers around, his defense is still lacking despite improvements made in 2019. Murphy has four years of team control remaining and is a year away from salary arbitration. It wouldn't be surprising to see Narvaez dealt before the winter meetings on Dec. 8-12. The Rays could be the right fit, as they could use the catching depth and have the kind of young pitching that Seattle would want in return.
