Blake Griffin 2019 Player Outlook
5 years agoThe Pistons star set career-highs in points per game (24.5) and threes per game (2.5) last year. His 3.4 turnovers per game was also a career-high. Griffin got a ton of usage for the Pistons last year, playing about 35 minutes per game and having the offense typically run through him. None of that should change heading into this year and his supporting cast has gotten a bit better.
The offseason additions of Derrick Rose, Tony Snell and Markieff Morris should take some pressure off Griffin, which could be both good and bad for fantasy purposes. A fantastic passer, Griffin could raise his assists per game from last year’s 5.4 up to either where it was in his first 25 games with the Pistons in 2018 (6.2) or even higher.
He could see fewer double-teams this year, and that could help him raise his FG%, which was 46.2% last year. He’s a career 50.2% shooter but that’s dipped since he began shooting more threes. The FG% upside might be somewhere in between last year’s mark and his career mark, around 48%.
He’ll still do a lot of scoring, but could fall back down to a mark closer to his career average of 21.9 points per game. All in all, Griffin should have a strong season in every non-defense category and is worthy of a late second or early third round pick in most standard leagues.
