Francisco Mejia Emerging As Quality Backstop
5 years agoSan Diego Padres catcher Francisco Mejia cracked a solo homer in four at-bats Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. The long ball was Mejia’s eighth of the season as he continues ascending as the Friars everyday backstop. Since his recall on June 18, the 23-year-old has lifted his OPS from .466 to a now-sturdy .776. After some early struggles, Mejia is demonstrating the hit tool that made him one of baseball’s top prospects heading into the season. With catcher Austin Hedges playing below replacement level, Mejia’s stock should be rising within the organization. He’s certainly a palatable fantasy catcher in redraft leagues and a premium one in dynasty.
