LA Rams D/ST 2019 Player Outlook - Could Still Prove a Draft Value
5 years agoThe LA Rams D/ST finished the 2018 season second only to the Chicago Bears in points scored, and enter 2019 projected as one of the league's top units. While they did lose mercenary defensive-tackle, and known rabble-rouser, Ndamukong Suh, to free-agency, the Rams did make some key additions to the squad. They signed veteran experience in linebacker Clay Matthews and safety Eric Weddle. They also prioritized defense in the draft, using their second and fourth-round draft picks respectively on safety Taylor Rapp and cornerback David Long. Therefore, Wade Philips will still have plenty of talent in his second year as the team’s defensive coordinator. None are more important than reigning defensive player of the year, Aaron Donald, a true difference maker who is a one-man scheme-wrecking machine.
While the Bears are the consensus number-one ranked fantasy unit, with an ADP of 134 on NFBC, the Rams have a similarly high ceiling but come in over 30 picks later. At their current ADP of 176, the Rams rank just ahead of teams like the Jaguars, Ravens, and Chargers. That is the point in drafts when everyone who didn’t reach for the Bears, begin to consider going defense.
Along with that ceiling, the Rams also carry a high floor as they projected as the second-highest scoring unit going into 2019, but they also have a strength of schedule tied for the second-easiest in the league. With two games against the league-doormat Arizona Cardinals in the final seven games of the season, including Week 17 for those leagues who run through then, it may be worth reaching a little bit for the Los Angeles Rams.
