Jameis Winston 2019 Outlook: Great Upside Under New Coaching Leadership
6 years agoTampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston comes into the season, having been given a vote of confidence by the new coaching staff led by Bruce Arians. Arians' return to coaching after previously retiring from the game, and is widely expected to help Winston become a far more effective quarterback. Winston still has a wide array of options for him to use with elite receiver Mike Evans, and the second option in Chris Godwin who looked to be improving week on week last season. Winston lost two receivers including the under-rated Adam Humphries this offseason, but tight end O.J. Howard should be able to occupy the same area of the field reducing the impact of his absence. The biggest gain for Winston this offseason was actually the new defensive talent that the team brought in. The team used its first five selections to improve the defensive unit that struggled last season, and that should mean that there will be less pressure on Winston to throw the ball to keep the team in the game. Winston has shown himself to be a highly effective quarterback since entering the league but has been prone to mistakes. Arians can be a demanding coach, but ultimately is a great offensive mind, who has shown he can adapt to the strengths of the players he has available to him. If Winston is able to cut down on the number of mistakes that have plagued his early career then he could be a fantasy MVP-calibre talent. If he isn't able to overcome those mistakes, then it could be a frustrating season for owners- but given the required investment it's a low-risk option, and a popular late-round quarterback selection this season.
