Corey Davis 2019 Outlook: Put Up or Shut Up Time
6 years ago2019 is the year for Corey Davis to have his breakout. No, I am not saying it will happen. But if it doesn’t it will be time to pull the plug on your love for him. It is true he has not had the best quarterback in Marcus Mariota to help his fantasy status but there are a number of talented receivers in the same situations who have overcome this to produce in the NFL. Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona immediately comes to mind. The Titans were in a perfect position for him to excel last season after the loss of Delanie Walker in Week 1 and while he had flashes, he still ultimately disappointed.
With 65 receptions for 891 yards and four touchdowns, Davis did take a big step forward in 2018. The four touchdowns were in fact the first four of his NFL career, but this is not good enough for a WR1 on a team unless there are a lot of other players needing to be fed. This is clearly not the case with the Titans so this simply will not do. With Walker coming back and rookie draft pick A.J. Brown coming in from Ole Miss there should be more passing this season than in any other season he has been there. The question is how many targets will there be for Davis, in an offense with plenty of mouths to feed now. Derek Henry finally getting the run work he needs to be effective should help wear down defenses while also keeping them honest, thus by opening up the downfield for Davis to do his work.
The real key to Corey Davis in 2019? His value. Whereas he was drafted in the fourth or fifth round in 2018, the shine is off of him now and he has fallen into the ninth round as WR41 in fantasy drafts. Whether he grows as a receiver this season or stays stagnant with the mediocre numbers he had last season, he should still be far better than the WR41. In fact, with these numbers last season he finished as the WR27 making this great value for Davis at his current ADP. At a point in drafts where most will be looking at a third or fourth running back, you could be getting a potential top-30 receiver as perhaps your WR4/5. If you decide to load up on high caliber running backs early? He could be a great WR3 for you so late in drafts. Mariota should be healthier this season, but if not, the Titans will turn to Ryan Tannehill. Mariota started to build a connection with Davis last season so this would be just fine. But if it does become the Tannehill show. There is one thing we know. He loves to lock on to one player and that player will likely be Davis. At this price, he is worth the risk. So, take it.
