Mike Evans 2019 Outlook: The Captain of the Ship
6 years agoWith Bruce Arians taking over for Dirk Koetter in Tampa Bay the Buccaneers offense should not miss a beat. With a solidified quarterback situation in Jameis Winston, the promise of even better things is also upon us. Us being Mike Evans and his fantasy owners that is.
At 6’5 and 231 pounds, Evans is a downfield target in an offense which will want to utilize him in just this manner. His 17.7 yards per catch in 2018 along with his eight touchdowns show his ability to make contested catches. With the limited accuracy of Winston, this will be key to any success the duo will have this season.
While playing with two quarterbacks last season Evans still managed 86 receptions and 1,524 yards on 138 targets. The departure of DeSean Jackson to Philadelphia and Adam Humphries to Tennessee will leave more targets open for Evans and new second receiver Chris Godwin to split. While all of these targets are surely not going to just Evans, his targets should head north of 150. This could allow him to break both the 100-catch mark as well as the 10-touchdown mark. If O.J. Howard returns healthy, and the Buccaneers can form a semblance of a run game in 2019; this will only open up the downfield even further and allow him to challenge the 2,000-yard mark. Yes, I said it.
In drafts, Mike Evans is currently and inconceivably going at the very end of the second-round. That is behind players such as JuJu Smith-Schuster and Antonio Brown. Both of these receivers have questions marks as they head into new roles. Evans is a much safer play at this point in drafts. With the familiarity of him on this team, he could also provide the highest ceiling of these players come the end of the season. While all three are virtual locks for top-10 finishes, Evans has a chance for a top-three finish in the Bruce Arians led offense in Tampa Bay.
