49ers Running Back Situation Is Complicated
6 years agoThe San Francisco 49ers have five running backs on the roster heading into the 2019 season, and it's unclear how the pecking order will shake out. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the running backs on the roster will decide who plays and not him. "It’s up to the players. They will define their roles. That’s kind of what’s unique about this," Shanahan said. San Fran signed Tevin Coleman in the offseason and they believe Jerick McKinnon will be ready for the offseason program after tearing his ACL last preseason. Matt Breida, Jeff Wilson and special teams standout Raheem Mostert are also in the picture. Injuries and performance will make things clearer as we get closer to the season. Breida could lead early-down carries, while Coleman might have a leg up for pass-catching duties due to his familiarity with Shanahan from their time in Atlanta.
