Jason Kipnis 2019 Player Outlook: Could Benefit From Batting Order Placement
6 years agoIt was another down season for Kipnis in 2018. He finished the regular season with a .230 AVG (19th among second basemen) and only tallied seven stolen bases (13th among fellow second basemen). This was a player who notched at least 12 stolen bases in each season between 2012-2016. His career-high was 31 swipes in 2012. Sure, Kipnis might have outfield eligibility, but his rankings are worse when compared to similar stats at that position. Going by Kipnis’ 2018 stats, his seven stolen bases would rank tied for 30th among outfielders and his .230 AVG would be 54th among qualified outfielders. On RotoBaller, Kipnis is ranked 96th in the outfield and 36th among second basemen. When looking at the NFBC average draft position, Kipnis is going 350th overall, 32nd when looking at second basemen. If it’s any consolation, Kipnis had a better second half to his season. He batted .244 after the All-Star break (.222 pre All-Star break) and Kipnis crushed five home runs in the month of September (most in a month for 2018). The biggest thing Kipnis has going for him in 2019 is his spot in the lineup. Currently, Kipnis is projected to bat second, between Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. With potential MVPs batting before and after him, Kipnis could get better pitches to hit.
