J.T. Realmuto 2019 Outlook: Top-Tier Catcher
6 years agoMiami Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto has elevated himself into elite status among catchers. He had the best season of his career, continuing to demonstrate excellent plate discipline with power and a touch of speed. In 2018, Realmuto led all catchers in doubles (30) and runs (74), finishing third in homers (21), and adding a .277 batting average with three stolen bases. These accomplishments are even more impressive considering he played with an offensively-challenged lineup around him. Realmuto has consistently proven to be durable, as he has finished in the top-three of plate appearances for the last three years, leading the category in 2017 with 579 PA. With talk of a trade again this offseason, there are hopes that he could be in a better environment when the season starts. Even without that, Realmuto could very well be the top catcher in baseball. He will provide 20 bombs with a high average and potentially five-to-ten stolen bases. The expectation would be even greater if he changes scenery. With a deserving ADP of 55, it is apparent that if you want to have peace of mind at the catcher position, you’ll need to get in near the fifth round.
