Charles Sims 2018 - Post-Hype Sleeper Who May Never Wake Up
6 years agoThe 2018 offseason was a tough one for Charles Sims. While Tampa Bay elected to not to sign a big name runner in free agency in the mode of C.J. Anderson or Frank Gore, the Buccaneers opted to take Ronald Jones II from USC in the second round of the NFL Draft. Combine the rookie stud that many expect to play a big role with 2017’s best runner by a country mile Peyton Barber and solid no. 3 back Jacquizz Rodgers, and Sims looks to be on the outside looking in.
The 27-year-old hasn’t come close to making good on the promise he showed in 2015, when he picked up 1,090 all purpose yards with four touchdowns. Last season, Sims gained just 95 rush yards and 249 receiving yards on 56 total touches with a season long gain of just 25 yards. For a guy that doesn’t pass block super well and struggles to run between the tackles, that kind of production leaves a lot to be desired. Sims’ calling card has always been his receiving ability, but Barber has shown better hands than expected in offseason workouts and Jones has displayed such ability in college as well. It just looks like Sims could be one of many cuts for a Bucs team looking to get more spark out of the offense.
Chuck could be interesting in a new environment with fewer options. Honestly, I’d love to see him try to do somethings with the Seahawks or 49ers, maybe even the Cardinals if David Johnson doesn’t return to himself. In uber deep leagues, Sims might be worth a flier, especially since he’s currently the 102nd runner and 374th overall off the board. At that range, you’re basically throwing darts at a board and praying. But Charles Sims’ path to fantasy relevance likely lies with a different team than the one that drafted him in 2014.
