Malcolm Mitchell 2018 Outlook: Can He Find Old Glory?
6 years agoFinishing off his rookie season out of Georgia in the Super Bowl by catching the most receptions by a rookie in any of Tom Brady’s appearances looked like a magical connection was to come in following years. With the injury to Julian Edelman before last season, this picked up steam until Malcolm Mitchell also got hurt and missed the season on injured reserve. Now he is back in the fold and with Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola gone and Edelman suspended for the first four games, the opportunity looks to still be there for Mitchell to shine. While he will have to compete for targets with the likes of Rob Gronkowski and Chris Hogan, it is very easy to see him being the clear third target in the receiving game of a high-powered offense who led the league in 2017 averaging over 24 first downs. The Patriots love to run the ball by the short pass and we have seen in the past Brady’s willingness to go to Mitchell. He has been hampered by injuries throughout the preseason, so his status is somewhat in doubt, unfortunately. If you can get him as your fifth or sixth receiver, he could outperform those expectations if healthy.
