Matt Ryan 2018 Season Outlook: Target as High-End QB2
6 years agoMatt Ryan’s exceptional production in 2016 vaulted him to second behind Aaron Rodgers in fantasy scoring, as he easily attained career bests in yardage (4,944) and touchdowns (38). It also motivated owners to seize him early in their drafts, as his fifth round ADP made Ryan the fourth quarterback chosen during the process. However, replicating those numbers during Steve Sarkisian's first season as Atlanta’s play caller was an improbable task, and Ryan's output predictably declined in 2017 (4,095 yards/20 touchdowns). The statistical slide was a byproduct of an overall downturn by the Falcon offense, as the unit averaged 51 fewer yards per game, while their scoring dropped by 11.7 points per game. Ryan also manufactured multiple touchdowns in just five different contests last season, after accomplishing it 12 times in 2016. However, his yardage total was exceeded by only five other quarterbacks, which enabled him to finish at QB15.
Ryan's numbers should rise to a level that resides somewhere between the results of his last two seasons, which should induce owners to consider him as a high-end QB2, with potential to deliver QB1 results during favorable matchups. However, you can remain reasonably patient, as his current ADP of 109 indicates. If you ultimately plan to target the 10-year veteran, it is safe to anticipate output that resembles his career averages prior to 2016 (4,100 yards/25 touchdowns).
