Curtis McElhinney Stops 38 Shots In Second Win In Two Days
7 years agoToronto Maple Leafs goaltender Curtis McElhinney made 38 saves in a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night after winning a relief appearance in overtime against the Dallas Stars the night before. The Maple Leafs No. 1 goalie, Frederik Andersen, left the match during the second period with an upper-body injury while the Stars were leading the Leafs 3-2, allowing McElhinney to enter and eventually win the game in a shootout 6-5. McElhiney has been a reliable backup netminder for Toronto this season, maintaining a 9-4-1 record with a 2.25 goals-against average and .931 save percentage after the match on Thursday. The severity of Andersen’s injury is unknown, but the Leafs are maintaining a firm grasp on third place in the Atlantic division and a playoff spot. With that in mind, it’s doubtful that they will be rushing him back before the playoffs and should lean heavily on McElhinney to start quite a few games through the end of the regular season. Expect an announcement on the starting goalie assignment before Toronto returns to action on Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens.
