Logan Morrison Looking To Bring His Power To Minnesota
7 years agoMinnesota Twins first baseman Logan Morrison had the best season of his career in 2017, slugging 38 home runs and posting an .868 OPS. While he thought that this season with the Rays would yield a multi-year deal, he only got a one-year contract from Minnesota. Part of this was because of the market, but a .246 batting average and 42 home runs in the preceding three seasons were also a factor as well. Since hitting .283 in 244 at-bats as a rookie in 2010, Morrison has never hit over .262 in a season (so you cannot expect much in the way of average), but fantasy owners need to be leery about his sudden jump in power. All of his Statcast power metrics jumped, led by his 7.8 barrels per plate appearance (30th in baseball). The power surge coincided with an increased strikeout rate, suggesting that this was a total change of plate approach; while this radical for a 30-year-old, it worked, as his wOBA set a new career high. A player that has been over 30% hard hit in all of his MLB seasons, Morrison topped out at 37.4% last season and 46.2% fly balls led to his massive power boost. The Twins offense is one on the rise and Morrison will provide a strong left-handed power bat in the middle of the lineup. He will also be motivated by the fact that he is on a one-year deal with the Twins, when he thought that he would cash in from his 2017 results, so he has top-15 1B upside.
