Denard Span Has Some Deep League Appeal
7 years agoTampa Bay Rays outfielder Denard Span was traded to the Rays in the offseason in the deal that sent Evan Longoria to the Giants. Span is coming off a 2017 season where he batted .272 with 12 home runs and 12 steals. He rarely strikes out (having not topped 79 in a season over the past 8 seasons). Several other analytics suggest his statistics should not decline and if you want a deeper look, check out our Champ of Chump article that you can find on his player page (as of March 4th). In February, a series of moves cleared out a few outfielders and only saw Carlos Gomez added. This has led to Span being one of four outfielders contending for three outfield spots plus the chance Span has to occasionally be the designated hitter. As long as he gets to 450 plate appearances, he should serve as a steady and safe OF4 or OF5 in a 12-team mixed league.
