Patrick Corbin Is Looking For Consistency
7 years agoPatrick Corbin enjoyed a successful 2017 season likehe has not seen for some time. He has been annually searching for a performance similar to his pre-Tommy John year of 2013. Corbin matched his career-high strikeout total (178), providing a decent K/9 of 8.45. He did this by increasing both his first pitch strike and swinging strike percentages, 62.5 and 11.0 respectively. Corbin also had another season with an excellent ground-ball percentage over 50 (50.4). It was not a completely solid year from start to finish though. He started off the first half at a 4.71 earned run average. However, he improved drastically in the second half, with an ERA of 3.26. Two other concerns that Corbin had were giving up too many home runs (1.23 HR/9) and failing to resolve his issues against right-handed batters, allowing a .289 average. The HR concern will be slightly alleviated by the installation of a humidor at Chase Field. The improvements he made in the second half give hope that he can carry it forward into 2018. There are positive signs that Corbin could be a satisfactory starter at the back of your rotation; however, it is a complete risk pick. You will not have to pay too much for his services, either in the draft (21st round) or in a trade.
