Devin Mesoraco Expected To Serve As Backup Catcher In 2018
7 years agoCincinnati Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco struggled through another injury-plagued season in 2017. The catcher dealt with a fractured foot which limited him to just 56 games this past season. Mesoraco broke out in 2014 with a big season but has played in just 95 games in the three seasons since, having season-ending surgery on his hip in 2015 and then his shoulder in 2016. When healthy, Mesoraco offers a plus bat at the catcher position but his injury history makes it hard for fantasy owners, and the Reds, to trust him at this point. Mesoraco is expected to open the season as the primary backup to starting catcher Tucker Barnhart. As such, Mesoraco should not be drafted in fantasy leagues this spring. It appears that Mesoraco's only path to fantasy relevance this season would be an injury to Barnhart.
