Scooter Gennett Looking To Repeat 2017 Success
7 years agoThe Cincinnati Reds claimed second baseman Scooter Gennett off of waivers right before the 2017 season began. It turned out to be one of their best moves of the season as Gennett went on to have a career year. Gennett finished the season with a .295/.342/.531 slash line, 27 homers, 80 runs, 97 RBI, and three stolen bases. He will open the 2018 season as Cincinnati's starting second baseman. It is reasonable to expect Gennett to regress some this season as his 1.10 GB/FB rate in 2017 was an outlier, well below his career mark of 1.26. He did, however, start hitting the ball harder than he ever had during his career, finishing with a 34,4% hard hit rate, 5.0% over his career mark. That being said, based on his late-January ADP, Gennett is only being drafted as the 35th second baseman in mixed league drafts. That makes him a solid bargain, even if he doesn't quite replicate what he did in 2017. He is a worthy target if you choose to wait on the position or even as a reserve middle infielder.
