Week 13 Waiver Wire: Catchers

We're in Week 13 of the season. Yes, there are people out there who are superstitious and think that 13 is an unlucky number. Surveying this group of catchers, it does seem like Jason Vorhees carved out a bloody swath. The victims include people like Francisco Cervelli, who has been bouncing on and off the disabled list. It's that bloody bad. Sorry, this whole Brexit thing has made me temporarily adopt a British accent. Bollocks.

Anyways, it seems like there aren't 13 good catchers out there. Desperation has gripped some people to bump Willson Contreras - he of 37 at-bats so far - all the way to 67% ownership already. Fear not. We'll just forge on with our stiff upper lips and find at least some people to help you out in your fantasy leagues. Just be on the lookout for a guy in a hockey mask behind you. As always, our cut-off is sub-70% ownership in Fleaflicker leagues.

Week 13 Waiver Wire Catchers

J.T. Realmuto (MIA) 69% - *Grabs game show host microphone* "Hello! Welcome back to the Catcher Waiver Wire Group, J.T.! It seems like not enough people wanted to have a catcher who is still hovering around .300 and is third among all catchers in hits..." *inaudible reply* " Yes, I know. It's a bummer. A real bummer. I mean... you got a hit in eight of your last 10 starts. You even drove in some runs! What do these people WANT? OK. Make yourself comfortable. But not too much - you might be over 70% again before you know it. Here's a coupon for a free drink. People... take this guy. He looks so sad to be back on here."

Evan Gattis (HOU) 67% - Even though the hulking behemoth is primarily a DH, not enough people are taking advantage of his availability as a catcher. The man hit seven homers in June alone, which has been the seasonal output of many catchers with higher percentages of ownership. Admittedly, he struggled some in the middle of the month, but he still brings power to the table.

Derek Norris (SD) 40% - Yet another plea for the Bearded One. He's hiked his average way up from where it was at the beginning of June and he's got 10 homers, which is only two behind the leaders at his position. He's also tied for third in runs among backstops. Heck, he's even got three stolen bases, which is pure pudding when it comes to that category for catchers. Let's get his ownership numbers up, OK?

Kurt Suzuki (MIN) 10% - While Ichiro has been getting all the attention for his milestone chase, this Suzuki has quietly been hitting the cover off the ball lately. Over his past 15 games, the Minnesota backstop has a .415 average and he's got a .279 average this season so far. That's much better than many of the other choices among catchers. If he keeps this up, he could be a huge steal for either a one or two-catcher league.

Jason Castro (HOU) 8% - Yes, this is another Astros catcher, but Castro gets the bulk of the catching duties. The thing with Castro is that while he's got a very low batting average, he has scored a decent amount of runs so far - 28 - which puts him in the thick of things among catchers. Yes, it's a very low bar but we take what we can get.

Cameron Rupp (PHI) 7% - Rupp's been hitting really well, especially over the course of his past 10 games. He got a hit in nine of those 10 games and his average is now up to .273. The Phillies backstop has even displayed some power over that span, smacking three of his seven homers. Grab him while he's hot. He could really benefit those in two-catcher leagues.
