Analysis: At the time, sending Mat Latos to the Marlins in exchange for Anthony DeSclafani seemed like a pretty even deal. Now that Latos was DFA'd by the White Sox and DeSclafani has taken his role in the youthful, high-upside Cincinnati rotation, it looks like the Reds got away with quite a steal. DeSclafani made a return start for the Reds and pitched great against the power-hitting A's at home by throwing six innings and allowing just one earned run. That start adds to his cumulative MLB figures of a 4.31 ERA and 1.36 WHIP.
In his minor league career the 26-year-old has a 3.3o ERA, 1.22 WHIP, a solid 0.6 HR/9, and a phenomenal 1.9 BB/9 in 70 total starts. Even in 37 starts in the majors, 'Disco' has only walked 2.5 batters per nine innings pitched on average. His control has been fantastic, but at 7.2 K/9 in the MLB, his strikeout totals don't pop off the page. However he has improved in the whiff department by going from 6.7 K/9 at Single-A, to 7.7 K/9 at Double-A, and finally 8.7 K/9 at Triple-A. With Cincinnati, he may not be a great candidate for a lot of wins, but with such great command and improved strikeout potential, DeSclafani is one of many talented prospects that make up the Reds' future.
