Cut List (Week 2): Players to Consider Cutting Bait On…

The first week of the season is always interesting. Fantasy players are overreacting like crazy to everything they see, or don't see, from their picks. Over the years you see some funny "rage drops" for flavor of the week guys you never hear from again. On that note, here are some guys that should be safe to cut bait with and take that gamble with some of the trendy pickups.

Editor’s Note: RotoBaller’s fantasy baseball waiver wire pickups list is updated every single day. Our awesome writers bring you analysis on hot or emerging starting pitchers, and also all other fantasy positions. You can also download our waiver wire iPhone app for free, and easily stay updated.

Week 2 Players to Consider Cutting

1) Socrates Brito, Diamondbacks OF

As much potential as this guy has, his situation at the moment is not very favorable. Brito struggles against lefties, and Chris Owings has not looked terrible in center field. Manager Chip Hale also has a log jam of players in the infield that he wants to give at-bats. The vacancy left by A.J. Pollock gives him an avenue to play some guys in the outfield, but that won't help Brito's value. Should this situation change, Brito's value would jump significantly. Until then though, let him be someone else's headache.

2) Cameron Maybin, Tigers OF

So I was DL stashing Maybin and hoping he could return to his form from 2015's first half. Don't hold your breath. Not only did he struggle mightily in the second half last year, but he also won't hit towards the top of the lineup like he did in 2015. To make matters worse, he will likely return to a platoon situation with Anthony Gose. No thanks. Don't waste roster space on a guy who wouldn't be too tough to replace anyway.

3) Avisail Garcia, White Sox OF

Remember when people used to compare him to Miggy when he stood at the plate? Unfortunately, being a stud's doppleganger doesn't count for anything (see Morton, Charlie). Garcia had a strong spring but has been miserable so far. Only two hits, and no counting stats to speak of. In the spirit of Hawk Harrelson, HE GONE! (Update: he did go deep on Saturday so maybe he should be in the hot seat section. I still don't like him).

4) Jose Reyes, Rockies SS

Anyone who drafted Reyes late hoping they could get some sneaky steals value once he comes back from his suspension might want to abandon ship. Trevor Story has burst onto the scene in Colorado with a bang. We all know it probably won't last, but the upside Story has beats anything Reyes will give you at this point. Not only that, but also, because we still haven't heard anything definite about how long Reyes will be suspended, things don't look good. He might be out a long time. Reyes can be cut safely.

Hot Seat

So these are some guys you shouldn't cut just yet, but who would be the first to go on most rosters if you need to add someone else.

1) Andrew Cashner, Padres SP

After showing great strikeout potential a couple of years ago, Cashner has not been straight cash homie. He's been anything but and his team won't do him any favors. His stuff and home park are good enough to warrant holding for another start or two, but he's on thin ice. If some can't miss waiver player comes along, you should strongly consider cashing out Cashner.

2) Wil Myers, Padres OF/1B

Myers has some upside, so you don't want to give up on him yet. However, he also has not really delivered on his potential yet, and it's questionable whether he will do so in San Diego. The good news here is that he will get a lot of playing time, but again if you find a better option, I have no problem cutting Myers for him.

3) Marcell Ozuna, Marlins OF

Another guy many probably drafted late in the hopes of some cheap power. Unfortunately, his home park is not quite suited for that. Not only that, but Ozuna really struggled last year and had to be demoted for a while to try and get his groove back. Outfield is a deep position, so if Ozuna doesn't start hitting some bombs soon it might be time to move on.
