Opening Day, Part III! Thanks to Mother Nature, the celebration that normally is spread over two days has been stretched to three. I, for one, have no complaints. I would, however, have lots of them had I played the afternoon slate yesterday, which was not light on rainouts. Here at Rotoballer we will have picks and analysis for both DraftKings and FanDuel on a daily basis. This edition will focus on the Tuesday FanDuel slate.
We've got ourselves a 12-game slate tonight, with three games falling in the afternoon-to-late-afternoon range, and the remaining nine set to start at roughly 7 pm Eastern. Let's take a look at some top plays and value plays for Opening Day, Part III.
Offense Stacks to Target for FanDuel DFS
Especially so early in the season, cases can be made for stacking just about any lineup. With that mind, and since I like to make a conscience effort to give you stacks that are both affordable and non-obvious (and therefore less likely to be high owned)...
Top of the Mariners order against Martin Perez
The Mariners get a major park upgrade in playing in Arlington tonight and they've got a number of hitters at the top of their order that hit left-handed pitching very well. I've got my eyes on Ketel Marte, Kyle Seager, Robinson Cano and the prize of this group, Nelson Cruz. Not only are these guys usually all in a row in the order, but they are a very affordable stack, especially when you consider their upside and the potential to pair them with more expensive studs.
Middle of the Mets order against Chris Young
I honestly don't think the early game is too appealing, but if I end up putting in a line or three (and I will), I'm certainly going to go with a Mets' stack, as I think they can jump all over Young. On top of that, with every bat so affordable, I think stacking is one of the better ways to build a unique lineup from your competition. The Mets hitters in the middle of the order I have my eye on that hit right-handed pitching well, save for Lucas Dude who you may see in the five-hole, are Yoenis Cespedes, Michael Conforto and Neil Walker. Curtis Granderson hits righties exceptionally well, too, I just wish we could see him in some other spot than leadoff.
Giants left-handed hitters against Jimmy Nelson
My only wish right now is that the Giants had more left-handed bats that I could stack my lineups with. In a nutshell, the Giants left-handed hitters not only get a major park upgrade, they get to pick on Jimmy Nelson. In 2015, Nelson allowed a .376 wOBA and a .495 slugging percentage against left-handed hitters. The potential right-handed I add to this stack will depend on lineup order, but the lefties I have my eyes on are Denard Span, Joe Panik and Brandon Belt.
DFS Starting Pitchers to Target for FanDuel
Oh, the directions you can go today are endless. So many aces and top tier starters available for the taking, and pretty cheaply, too.
Jon Lester (SP, CHC) - $10,700
Speaking of fairly cheap aces (Arrieta fans are going to come after me, I know it), Jon Lester has a good opportunity to rack up the points tonight. From a pitcher's perspective, he gets a park upgrade, and I do love the fact that he finished spring training on a high note, registering quite a few strikeouts along the way. At this price and against an Angels lineup that doesn't strike too much fear outside of the likes of Mike Trout and maybe Albert Pujols, Lester is a nice, safe value tonight with high strikeout upside.
Justin Verlander (SP, DET) - $8,900
For those of you not interested in spending five figures on starting pitching, I give to you Kate Upton's boyfriend. Call me crazy, but I think Verlander has a lot of potential tonight in GPP formats - both because I think he'll be overlooked and due to the fact he still has big strikeout game capabilities. He finished the second half of the season on a strong note, and I think we'll start to see him slightly regress towards the once-dominant Verlander he was a few seasons ago.
Also Consider: James Shields (SP, SD) - $8,700 (tournament only) and David Price (SP, BOS) - $12,300
DFS Infielders to Target for FanDuel
James McCann (C, DET) - $2,400
Not surprisingly, the catchers are the most underwhelming group of the day. I'm going to save some cash here and go with some pop. McCann handled left-handed pitching very well in 2015, posting a .385 wOBA and a .242 ISO.
Nolan Arenado (3B, COL) - $4,500
Don't let the price tag keep you from adding him to your roster tonight. Arenado can crush right-handed pitching, and did so last season to the tune of a .308 ISO. He owned an impressive .377 wOBA as well in 2015.
Prince Fielder (1B, TEX) - $3,400
I may not really be going out on a limb here in saying there's a lot of different directions you could go in at first base today in a 12-game slate, but there is. I'm a little torn, but I think Fielder has a great mix of the stats I'm looking for. Among first baseman, he has the third highest wOBA against the pitcher-side he's facing at .388, and he's eighth in slugging percentage at .496 (2015 stats). Additionally, he's got park factors working in his favor.
Ketel Marte (SS, SEA) - $2,600
You're not going to find a lot of pop available at shortstop today, at least not on any guys worth their price today. As such, I'm going with mid-tier price guy in Marte, as he handled left-handed pitching pretty well in 2015 (.325 wOBA and .408 slugging percentage). Those numbers aren't all that impressive, but he's a much better value when facing southpaws. He also has a few secondary factors working in his favor, like his ability to steal bags, hitting high in the order (usually slotted second) and having the best positive park factors of any shortstop tonight.
Neil Walker (2B, NYM) - $2,500
I had to throw an early-slate guy in there for anyone daring enough to play the three-gamer. Walker has a nice matchup against Chris Young, who doesn't have much velocity left in his stuff. While that lack of juice on his fastball didn't keep him from being effective last season, I feel pretty good about picking on him in this spot. In 2015, Walker owned a .338 wOBA and .455 slugging percentage against right-handed pitching.
DFS Outfielders to Target for FanDuel
Nelson Cruz (SEA, OF) - $4,000
All things considered, Mr. Cruz is my favorite outfielder of the day, regardless of slate. To say that Cruz feasts on left-handed pitching would be putting it far too lightly. We need a word that implies more than a feast. In 2015, Cruz mashed southpaws to the tune of a .459 wOBA, .315 ISO and a .673 slugging percentage!
Corey Dickerson (OF, TB) - $3,300
The park downgrade moving from Coors Field to Tropicana Field is pretty significant, but on the bright side, Dickerson will get consistent at-bats in the top-to-middle of the order with the Rays. The difference in splits when Dickerson faces a right-hander as opposed to a lefty are huge, and he should probably only be considered when facing right-handers, as is the case this evening.
Mitch Moreland (OF, TEX)
It's not a typo. I have already mentioned a Texas first baseman, but Moreland qualifies as an outfielder on FanDuel, and if you need a guy that might qualify as more of a value play, Moreland fits the bill. The former Mississippi State Bulldog makes his living off hitting right-handed pitching, posting a .377 wOBA and .239 ISO against them in 2015. Arlington is also a nice place for a left-handed hitter to rake, and Moreland usually finds himself somewhere in the middle of the lineup.
JD Martinez (OF, DET) - $3,400
Simply put, the man can mash with the best of them. What's enticing about JD, in addition to his power and impressive wOBA against lefties, is that his power comes in bunches quite often. I'm not saying he's going to hit two home runs tonight, but I'm also not saying he won't hit two home runs tonight, if you know what I'm saying. JD had a .281 ISO and .544 slugging percentage against left-handed pitching.
