Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery (knee) has been sidelined since suffering an MCL sprain during their Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Even with only two weeks left of the regular season, Montgomery has hinted at a possible return as he plans to avoid surgery.
So will Montgomery play again in 2024 or is he out for the year?

Is David Montgomery Out For The Season?
While the veteran running back will not return in the regular season, the Lions are keeping the door open for a potential playoff return. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the team is currently eying a return during the divisional round of the playoffs.

Fantasy managers playing in playoff competitions should continue to monitor his status during the postseason as his return would have significant implications to other players in the Detroit offense.
While he will remain sidelined for the time being, Jahmyr Gibbs will continue to be deployed as the workhorse of the backfield. Last weekend in Montgomery's absence, Gibbs logged a season-high 23 carries. He tallied 103 yards and a score on the ground and brought in four of his five targets for 45 yards.

Fantasy managers should view Gibbs as high-end RB1 for the remainder of the fantasy playoffs. He has a great matchup this weekend against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend who have allowed the eighth-most PPR points to opposing RBs.
When Montgomery does return, both running backs would return to their typical roles and would limit each others ceiling's throughout the NFL playoffs as they would share the opportunities at a 50/50 split.
