One and Done Selections - The FedEx St. Jude Championship
In this feature, our golf staff of Joe Nicely, Spencer Aguiar, Joe Idone, Matt Miller, Byron Lindeque, and our special guest will provide their weekly golf picks every Wednesday. The purpose of this article is to present you with alternative options to consider and hopefully make your selection a much easier process weekly. With that plan in mind, let's get started!
Joe Nicely - Tom Kim
The only consistent thing about Tom Kim this season is how inconsistent he’s been. Despite that volatility, the highs have been high recently, and include a runner-up finish at the Travelers and a near-medal moment at the Paris Olympics.
There’s no doubt that the young star’s game has some holes that will be exposed on several venues on the PGA Tour’s schedule. However, TPC Southwind is not one of those layouts, as Kim’s relative lack of distance off the tee won’t be a huge hindrance. His accuracy and streaky putting should play well in Memphis though, and there’s a chance he could make some noise in these FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Spencer Aguiar - Hideki Matsuyama
Alternate - Cameron Young
I was a pretty big proponent at the Olympics that Matsuyama got the very most out of his four rounds to skew some of the results.
All of that is worth noting, but as an industry, we have gone too far in the other direction of punishing overachieving putters past the point of what is fair. My model still thought Hideki was a top 15 performer in the field, and the funny thing about that answer is that if he had underachieved with the flat stick versus the result we got, more people would have likely jumped into the mix here, believing they were entering into a buy-low spot.
