Jacob deGrom Throws 30-Pitch Bullpen Session
5 months agoTexas Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom (elbow) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session on Tuesday and mixed in his changeup, but he's still "a ways away," according to manager Bruce Bochy. deGrom is making progress, but it's slow progress after he underwent Tommy John surgery last June. After perhaps a few more bullpen sessions, the 36-year-old could begin facing live hitters during batting practice. He'll need to go on a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment after that, so fantasy managers probably shouldn't expect deGrom to be an option for Texas' starting rotation again until sometime in August. deGrom made only six starts in 2023 after signing a five-year, $185 million deal, but in those six starts he struck out 45 and walked only four in 30 1/3 innings. He's one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball when he's healthy, but it's unrealistic to expect much out of him in 2024.
