Auston Matthews Hits Overtime Game-Winner
9 months agoToronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews registered his 54th goal of the season on Wednesday with a strike in overtime to push the past Buffalo 2-1. With the goal, Matthews reached 80 points for the season in only his 61st appearance. He became the ninth U.S.-born player in league history to record three consecutive 80-point seasons. Matthews' goal-scoring pace has dropped in recent games, with this being only his second tally in six outings, but he's still on pace for a mightily impressive 70-goal year -- Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne were the last players to reach the plateau in 1992-93.
