Robert Stephenson 2024 Player Outlook: Early Injury Dampening Outlook
10 months agoLos Angeles Angels reliever Robert Stephenson is listed as questionable for Opening Day after experiencing shoulder soreness early in spring training. The right-hander inked a three-year deal with the Halos this winter and was initially likely to serve as the setup man to incumbent closer Carlos Estevez. Considering Estevez struggled to a 6.59 ERA in the second half of 2023 and Stephenson thrived to a 1.50 ERA and an MLB-best 41.8% K-BB% at the same time, it appeared the 31-year-old could have usurped the closer's role from Estevez if the trends continued. Of course, Stephenson's resurgence came with the Tampa Bay Rays where pitchers tend to fare better than any other place in baseball. The Angels also added Matt Moore, Adam Cimber, and Luis Garcia to their new-look bullpen this winter, giving Stephenson increased competition for holds and saves. He is currently being taken with a 301.92 ADP, a spot where he could offer serious value if all goes well. However, given his injury and Estevez already being confirmed as the Angels' closer to begin the 2024 campaign, only the managers willing to take a risk will be drafting him in that vicinity.
