Rangers Could Carry Three Catchers On Opening Day Roster
10 months agoThe Texas Rangers are considering carrying three catchers on their Opening Day roster this year, according to manager Bruce Bochy. It could be one of their last roster decisions of spring training. Jonah Heim is the club's clear starting backstop, with Andrew Knizner the favorite to serve as his backup. The Rangers are very mindful of not overworking Heim during spring training this year after the team's successful World Series run last fall, which means that Sam Huff could get the nod on the Opening Day roster to begin the year as the No. 3 in order to give Heim even more rest early on in the 2024 campaign. Huff, 26, also has the ability to play first base and could also draw starts at designated hitter. In his three seasons in Texas, Huff has hit .262 (51-for-195) with 10 home runs and 20 RBI in 75 games.
