Patriots Hire Alex Van Pelt As Offensive Coordinator
11 months agoThe New England Patriots hired former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt as their new offensive coordinator on Thursday, according to sources. The former NFL quarterback and long-time respective assistant spent the last four seasons as the Browns' offensive coordinator but will now head to New England to run the team's offense in head coach Jerod Mayo's first year taking over for the legend Bill Belichick. The hire signals that the Patriots may be moving to more of a West Coast-based offensive system in 2024. Van Pelt didn't call plays while with the Browns, but the 2024 campaign will be his 29th season in the NFL and his 20th as an assistant head coach. Cleveland's running game ranked in the top 10 in three of his four years as coordinator. He has spent the majority of his career working with QBs, so perhaps the Patriots will be hoping he can salvage Mac Jones.
