Jack Flaherty Goes To Tigers On One-Year Deal
1 year agoFree-agent right-hander Jack Flaherty agreed on a one-year, $14 million with the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Flaherty was in the National League Cy Young race in 2019 with the St. Louis Cardinals but was limited by injuries several years later and hasn't quite been the same since with ERAs over 4.00 each of the last two years. In 2023 with the Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles, Flaherty was pretty hittable, posting a 4.99 ERA (4.36 FIP) and 1.58 WHIP with a career-high 66 walks and 148 strikeouts in 144 1/3 innings covering 29 appearances (27 starts). The 28-year-old did have a 25.5 percent strikeout rate and only a 7.3% walk rate last year, though, so he will have some bounce-back potential as a late-round flier in deep leagues in one of the best divisions for pitchers in the American League Central.
