Chicago Bears rookie running back Roschon Johnson (concussion) first suffered his head injury on Thursday night football in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders. Johnson left the contest pretty early after playing just six snaps in that game.
18 days later, and the rookie is still in the concussion protocol. Johnson missed Week 6 and Week 7 with a concussion while third-string running back D'Onta Foreman stepped in as the lead back over the past two weeks.
Is Johnson still dealing with a concussion? Will he practice this week? Let's dive in.
Roschon Johnson Injury Update for Fantasy Football
Since Johnson suffered a concussion two and a half weeks ago, he has not practiced in any capacity. But signs point to him practicing this week, possibly as early as Wednesday.
Bears head coach Matt Eberflux spoke with reporters on Monday and said Johnson has one more step to clear the concussion protocol and "looks real good" for his chances to practice on Wednesday. That likely puts the running back in a good spot to play on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Johnson will have three opportunities to practice this week leading up to Week 8. Check back here at RotoBaller to see if the rookie practices on Wednesday.
Roschon Johnson Fantasy Football Outlook
With Khalil Herbert (ankle) on the injured reserve list for at least two more weeks, Johnson should step in and carry some of the load for the Bears' backfield. He was in line to be the lead back when Herbert went down. But with Foreman's recent strong play, we might be looking at more of a 50/50 split.
Foreman has 35 touches for 187 yards and three touchdowns as Chicago's top back over the past two weeks. The 27-year-old also just had a three-touchdown game in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders. It would be a shock to see the Bears completely move him to a bench role, even if Johnson comes in and assumes RB1 duties this weekend.
However, if Johnson is on your waivers, he should be a solid pickup in most 10-plus team leagues. The Bears have raved about him all season, and it's only a matter of time before he really breaks out. With Herbert also out, the rookie running back will be a nice flex play in Week 8 in a solid matchup against the Chargers, assuming he clears concussion protocols.
