Jose Abreu Dealing With Back Discomfort
1 year agoHouston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) isn't in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles because he's dealing with lower-back discomfort, according to manager Dusty Baker. Abreu will be evaluated when the team returns home this weekend. With Abreu out on Thursday, Jon Singleton is starting at first base and batting sixth against Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer. Abreu has been a pretty big disappointment in 2023 in his first year in Houston. The three-time All-Star and former MVP in 2020 is slashing a lowly .234/.291/.343 with 10 home runs, 16 doubles, 56 RBI and 43 runs scored in 464 trips to the plate and 110 games. The 36-year-old has looked his age and has just three hits and 11 strikeouts in 39 plate appearances in nine starts since July 30.
