Baker Mayfield 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Not Worth the Risk Despite New Team
2 years agoFormer Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield signed a one-year, $4 million deal to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason. There isn't much upside to taking Mayfield late in drafts, even with star wide receivers like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin to throw passes to. He had just two games over 17 fantasy points last year and has just one game over 20 fantasy points over the past two seasons. Mayfield threw for 2,163 yards with a 10:8 TD: INT ratio across 12 games for the Rams/Browns in 2022. The 28-year-old has never been a weekly fantasy quarterback option since he entered the league in 2018, evidenced that he has yet to finish as a top-15 fantasy quarterback. Mayfield had some success with the Rams last season and threw for 850 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions in five games. However, he accounted for just 49.7 points (9.94 average points) in those games. Also, add that Mayfield has to compete with 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask for the starting quarterback job, and even if he does win it, the Buccaneers can easily decide to bench him for Trask at any point. The former No. 1 overall pick is ranked 30th among all signal callers in the latest Rotoballer's quarterback rankings. Despite being on a new team, Mayfield will provide little fantasy value in 2023 and is mainly an option in Two-QB and superflex formats.
