Irv Smith Jr. Expected To Fill The Void At The Position
2 years agoCincinnati Bengals tight end Irv Smith Jr. has a chance to thrive catching passes from Joe Burrow this season. He also is expected to fill the void left by Hayden Hurst, who signed with the Carolina Panthers as a free agent. "Yeah, we think he can come in and play that role for us," commented head coach Zac Taylor. "There's always competition in that room, but that's the vision we have for Irv to come in there and fill that role that Hayden had for us." The 23-year-old totaled 91 catches for 858 yards and nine touchdowns in 37 games with the Vikings. However, he's battled his share of injuries over the years, including missing the 2021 season because of a torn meniscus while being limited to eight games last season with an ankle injury. The Bengals may add more depth to the position via the 2023 NFL Draft. But Smith appears to have a lock on the No. 1 spot, although he will have to battle with Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd for targets during the 2023-24 campaign.
