William Byron On Pole At COTA, Looking For First Ever Top 5 Finish On Road Course
2 years agoWilliam Byron has to be pretty used to seeing his name at the top of the board this season. In addition to having two overall race wins already in 2023, Byron also has three Stage victories, and now you can add another type of win to his resumé: a pole win. The #24 Chevrolet was the fastest in qualifying at Circuit of the Americas on Saturday afternoon, as Byron posted a lap of 130.760 seconds and will now lead the field to the green flag for Sunday's EchoPark Automotive Grand Prix. A big question mark for William and his Hendrick Motorsports team, though, is whether they'll get a good finish. In 21 career starts at road courses in the Cup Series, Byron has zero top 5 finishes despite leading 15 or more laps in five of those events. In practice this weekend, Byron had the 5th-fastest five-lap average, and starting from the pole is definitely an advantage in NASCAR, so keep an eye out for this #24 Chevrolet on Sunday.
