Nick Pivetta Expected To Skip World Baseball Classic
2 years agoBoston Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta (illness) is expected to have to drop out of the 2023 World Baseball Classic due to an illness that has set him back a few days. Pivetta was looking like a potential ace for Team Canada. The 30-year-old dealt with COVID-19 last week and has been slow to bounce back in spring training with the Red Sox. He should be fine for Opening Day of the 2023 season in his third full season with Boston. In 2022, Pivetta went 10-12 with a 4.56 ERA (4.42 FIP), 1.38 WHIP and 22.6 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 179 2/3 innings over 33 starts. Pivetta's velocity and strikeout rate dropped last year, which led to him allowing more hard contact. He should be assured a rotation spot in Beantown, but he's very hard to trust on a start-to-start basis.
